Challenge

This academic strategy consulting project examined Spotify’s long-term competitive position within the rapidly evolving digital streaming industry. Despite being the world’s leading music streaming platform, Spotify faces increasing competitive pressure from ecosystem-driven rivals such as Apple, Amazon, and Google, whose integrated hardware, operating systems, and digital services create stronger customer lock-in and competitive advantages.

The objective was to identify Spotify’s key strategic challenges, evaluate its competitive position using established business frameworks, and develop practical recommendations that strengthen ecosystem integration, creator engagement, and long-term competitive resilience.

Approach

I conducted a comprehensive strategic analysis using Porter’s Five Forces, VRIO Analysis, Porter’s Three Conditions, Core Competence Analysis, and Stakeholder versus Shareholder Governance. These frameworks were supported by academic literature, industry reports, Reuters articles, and Spotify’s annual report to evaluate both Spotify’s internal capabilities and external competitive environment.

Based on the findings, I developed evidence-based strategic recommendations focused on ecosystem partnerships, creator ecosystem development, and platform differentiation. The project translated complex strategic analysis into practical business recommendations designed to improve Spotify’s long-term competitive position within the digital entertainment industry.
